Bessie Pease Gutmann
Chromolithographs
(Continued)

This is a scan from a 1912 chromolithograph of Bessie's famous "The Butterfly" painting. To the right is a 5X enlargement of this 10" x 13" print. Compare this to a scan from a modern 4-color offset "lithograph" on the far right.

The 4-color offset printing process on the far right lacks the color gamut and the smoother and more delicate tonal transitions found in the chromolithography process (middle image). In the 10X enlargements below, you can see how the chromolithograph on the left is made up of randomly placed dots (a hand-drawn process), whereas the 4-color offset is made up of a photo-mechanical screen pattern.

Our fine art Giclee printing process is able to capture the chromolithograph's exact random dot pattern and reproduce it with virtually no distortion, loss in color, tonal values or clarity. This is because our giclee process uses precisely placed pigmented ink droplets that are as small as a microscopic red blood cell, and with the gamut of two to three more ink colors than used in the 4-color photo offset (modern litho) process.

Left image is a 10X enlargement from a 1912 "The Butterfly" chromolithograph. The right image is an enlargement from a 4-color photo offset (modern litho) print.
