Bessie Pease Gutmann
Limited Edition Giclée Prints

HISTORY: When Bessie Pease and her husband formed their own publishing company, Gutmann and Gutmann, to produce reproductions of her work, they used the finest printing processes that were available at the time. Some of her earliest reproductions were done with the "chromolithography" process, and have stood up quite well against the ravages of time (although some of the papers have not held up quite as well, and have yellowed somewhat). These early chromos are prized by collectors, whereas prints from some of the later litho printing methods (i.e. four-color offset) are not as valued.

However, the thing that most often determines the value of most Gutmann and Gutmann original reproduction prints is the rarity of prints. This rarity is usually determined by the number of reproduction prints that were made. Some of Bessie Pease's illustrations were quite popular, so Gutmann and Gutmann sometimes made several reproduction printings in various sizes and often in printing runs of 10,000 to 20,000 prints. Less popular illustrations may have only been printed once, and therefore in just one size. Today, these shorter printings (limited editions due to lesser popularity) have created greater scarcity, and caused the price of these rarer prints to be much higher than some of Gutmann and Gutmann's other original reproductions.

VALUE OF BPG ORIGINAL REPRODUCTIONS: Today, Bessie Pease Gutmann original reproductions often average between $150 to $400 for the more popular illustrations that were printed in large numbers. Rarer, original reproductions can often fetch between $500 to $1,000.

OUR LIMITED EDITIONS: We have been authorized to make fine art giclée reproduction prints as close to Bessie Pease's originals as possible. These giclée prints are very collectable and should hold or even increase their value over time. To help further improve their value over time, we are limiting the number of prints made in each edition for each of our featured giclee prints. These editions are carefully limited to 975 prints in each title, and for a particular size within that edition. This limited edition print size is typically matched to the largest print size that was originally offered by Gutmann and Gutmann, which was often about 14" x 18". (Note: in a few of the more popular featured giclée prints, our editions are limited to 1500 prints.)

OUR OPEN EDITIONS: For each of the featured giclée prints, we also offer a smaller print size (usually an 8" x 10" image on 11" x 14" paper) that is an open edition (no limit to the number of prints in the edition). While these smaller, open edition giclée prints are not quite as valuable to collectors, they offer extremely high-quality art at a more affordable price. Their ability to provide long-term desplay without fading or yellowing, also makes them a choice as a family heirloom print that can be past on from generation to generation.
