Bessie was once asked to comment on her idea of "The American Girl". She wrote, "...we read that pearly white teeth and a beautiful complexion are indispensable for beauty. Doubtless it is true, yet this elusive model of mine could never hold her throne without a lovely character. She must be not only clever and fascinating, but tactful and lovable, a good friend and comrade, possessing poise and graceful dignity."
